A thin, adherent and usually insoluble deposit formed from lubricant oxidation or thermal degradation products on machinery surfaces. Varnish may be amber, brown or dark and can cause valves or other close-clearance components to stick and reduce heat transfer; in practice, the term is sometimes used broadly for several hard lubricant-derived deposits, including lacquer.
