A hard, smooth and often glossy deposit formed when lubricant and combustion-derived degradation products bake onto hot engine surfaces, particularly pistons, ring zones and cylinder liners. Lacquer can restrict moving parts and impair lubrication or heat transfer; the term overlaps with varnish, so inspection reports should describe the deposit's location and physical character.
