Total base number (TBN)

The acid-neutralising capacity of an oil measured by a specified titration method and expressed as the equivalent milligrams of potassium hydroxide per gram. TBN, now often called base number, indicates the lubricant's alkaline reserve, but results from different methods such as ASTM D2896 and ASTM D4739 are not necessarily interchangeable.
