Lubricant degradation caused by reaction with nitrogen-oxide combustion products, particularly in spark-ignition and gas engines. Nitration products can increase oil acidity, viscosity, insolubles and deposit formation and are commonly monitored by trending Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy results alongside other oil-condition tests.
