Elemental analysis of a lubricant, commonly by atomic-emission spectrometry, used to identify and quantify material associated with wear, additives and contamination. Results are most useful when trended against representative samples and equipment history; many methods respond poorly to large wear particles, so they do not replace particle inspection or other condition tests.
