Viscosity index improver (VII)

An oil-soluble polymer that reduces the rate at which a lubricant loses viscosity as temperature rises, enabling formulations such as multigrade oils. It raises the finished lubricant's calculated viscosity index, but mechanical or thermal degradation of the polymer can reduce its thickening effect in service.
