A full-fluid-film regime in which the lubricant film is sufficiently thick relative to the surface roughness to keep the opposing surfaces completely separated. The load is carried by pressure within the film, which may be generated hydrodynamically, elastohydrodynamically or by an external hydrostatic supply; the term describes relative separation rather than an absolute film thickness.
