Cavitation

The formation of vapour cavities where local liquid pressure falls below the liquid's vapour pressure, followed by their rapid collapse as pressure recovers. Repeated collapse can cause noise, vibration, loss of pump performance and characteristic erosive pitting on nearby surfaces.
