Synthetic fuel is fuel manufactured by chemical synthesis from feedstocks such as synthesis gas, hydrogen and a carbon source rather than obtained directly by conventional petroleum refining. An e-fuel is a type of synthetic fuel for which electricity provides the principal production energy, often through electrolytic hydrogen; the terms are therefore related but not interchangeable, and neither term alone proves renewable origin or low lifecycle emissions.
