A compound of nitrogen and hydrogen (NH3) that can be used as a marine fuel in suitably designed machinery and is normally stored onboard as a liquefied gas. Ammonia contains no carbon, but it is toxic and requires purpose-designed containment, ventilation, detection and emergency arrangements; its lifecycle greenhouse-gas impact depends mainly on how it is produced.
