In marine emissions control, AUS 40 is a high-purity solution containing nominally 40% urea by mass in demineralised water and supplied to a selective catalytic reduction system. The solution releases ammonia in the exhaust stream so the catalyst can reduce nitrogen oxides; it is not a fuel or lubricant and should not be confused with the nominal 32.5% automotive solution AUS 32.
